From New Starter to Managing a Team

Every manager at North started as a new starter. Here's how progression works, and why we wouldn't do it any other way.

Introduction

Most companies hire managers from outside. We do the opposite. Everyone who runs a team at North started at the very beginning, learning the basics like everyone else. Here's why we work this way, and what it means for anyone joining us.

When the people managing you have done your job themselves, everything changes. They know exactly what it's like to be new, what tends to trip people up and what actually helps. That kind of understanding can't be taught on a management course. Progression here isn't about waiting years or ticking boxes. It comes down to two things: how you perform, and how you support the people around you. The quickest way to move up is to get good at what you do, then help others get good too. Once you've mastered the foundations, you'll start helping to train new starters. It's one of the biggest steps in anyone's development. Teaching something forces you to understand it properly, and it builds the confidence and communication skills you'll need to run a team of your own. Promoting from within also keeps our standards consistent. The way we train, coach and look after people gets passed down from one group to the next, so new starters get the same support their managers once had. Whether you're looking for your first job or a fresh start, the path is there. Bring the attitude, and we'll help with the rest.
